Coffee in Nicaragua has a long and troubled history, with political revolution, natural disasters, and cold war bans from the United States all playing a role in the late-20th century torpedoing of a once-ascendant coffee region. But in recent years, the Nicaraguan coffee market has rebounded, and innovative groups of farmers such as Gold Mountain have attempted to uplift poverty-stricken regions and growing operations through high-cupping and vibrantly flavorful microlots.
This collaborative lot, shared between several Gold Mountain affiliated farms, is composed exclusively of the Maracaturra variety, a hybrid between Maragogype (known for its delicate floral notes as well as its enormous size) and Caturra (known for its expressive, berry-like tartness). It is among the cleanest and juiciest cups in Gold Mountain’s repertoire, a sterling representation of the current pinnacle of Nicaraguan specialty coffee, and a glimpse into the Jinotega region’s bright future.
